SENTENCED TO DEATH.

THE OXFORD MURDERED. Christchurch, .May 18. The trial of Charles Butler for the murder of Henrietta Louisa Foster at Oxford on April Bth was concluded to-day, after lasting for three days. Accused was found guilty with a strong recommendation to mercy owing to his low mentality. in passing sentence of death, Mr Justice Dennistou, addressing accused, said: “You have been convicted after a trial in which every consideration has been given to you. With the verdict of the jury 1 think it right, looking at the nature of tincase and its responsibilities upon the jury, to express my entire concurrence.” Under the circumstances he did not think that any other decision could have been come to with a strong recommendation to mercy, owing to low mentality. That recommendation would be forwarded to the proper authorities.
