CAUSE OF THE DARDANELLES CAMPAIGN.
ACCORDING to the Hon. Sir Iledworth Menx, M.P., if the Queen Elizabeth hud never been built the Durdunelles expedition would never hnve taken pluee. It was a blind belief in the power of the Queen Eliza belli that induced the Admiralty, or the then First Lord —who thought he represented the whole Admiralty, but apparently he didn't —to persuade the Government, including' Lord Kitchener, to embark on that great gamble. “It was difficult to know just what the Naval Lords did, but if they approved of the expedition it was a legitimate gamble; if they did not approve it ought not to have been entered into. It was nearly as foolish a thing as when 50 years ago many people gambled on Lady Elizabeth to win the Derby.”
