SI’HAKING to a deputation at Dunedin. Sir dames Allen said that reference’ had been made to some remarks he had made about economy. He repeated these remarks. It was a time for economy, lie wished to explain what kind of economy he was particularly referring to. lie was not so much referring to (he economy of items that could he produced in New Zealand, but to the items they had to import. In his mind at (he time was coal. The coal produced in this country had not been what it should have been. He also referred to Ihe importation of oil, and he warned the people at once (hat there must be a restriction of the use of oil for any other than necessary purposes. He further said that there must be a reduction in the use of paper. He tiiso referred to bread, and said that there was not sutlicieni wheat produced last year to supply the needs of the country, and it was necessary to import from outside. There might be a difficulty in gelling wheat and Hour to New Zealand, and therefore he asked the people to exercise reasonable economy with regard to bread and the use of (lour and wheal.
