Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 28, 1917. BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
JT should not hike our newly-el-ected Council loiifj to get into their iidministralive stride, as the majority of the old Councillors have been re-elected. Mayor Chrystall, after his investiture, will, no doubt, submit a comprehensive policy of works to be undertaken during the year, and once a clear course is mapped out the various committees can settle down to administer the borough funds to (he best advantage on behalf of (he borough as a whole. It must be remembered, however, that the revenue to be expended on the maintenance of roads and construction of footpaths is limited, but this work should be so arranged that one portion of the borough does not unduly benefit at the expense of the other. Main Street is the most important thoroughfare in the borough, and the properly in the vicinity carries a heavy burden of rales. While it is entitled to its share of attention, the Council should not forget that there are other thoroughfares which have been paying rates into the general fund for years and upon which nothing has been expended. Road and footpath construction and maintenance should be carried out as equitably as possible. Something should be done by the present Council to have the old cemetery vested in the Council and converted into a beauty-spot, if this matter were tackled thoroughly, the minor difficulties to its acquisition could be successfully overcome. Anyhow, we hope the question will be thoroughly gone into by the Mayor. The Mayor’s policy will be looked forward to with a good deal of interest by the Council and townspeople.
