MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Manawatu County Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday. Present: Crs. Sir James Wilson (chairman), H. H. Hunt, B. Gray, W. B. Barber, W. J. Phillips, Strode Penny, and M. Hammond. CORRESPONDENCE. Through Mr E. Newman, M.P., the Minister for Customs wrote stating the Council’s recommendation of a tax on tyres was a matter for Parliament, and it was unlikely any alteration would he made during the coming session. The Bulls-Sanson War Relief Pund Committee wrote, asking tor assistance in the formation of a road to the soldiers’ settlement. The Eketahuna County Council forwarded a resolution to the effect that the Government be requested to erect cold storage at the four main centres or in conjunction with present works, to store all surplus meal and produce. The Foxton Beach Improvement Society wrote regarding sand drift on road. GENERAL BUSINESS. The tender of I. Cooksley at 3s lid a yard was accepted for contract 234. The Overseer was instructed to arrange for contract 233. The Chairman was authorised to sign and affix seal to plan of exchange of land for road purposes through lot 2d, Moutoa Estate. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S RE- ’ PORT. The traffic for March was heavy, and a credit balance of £234 15s 9d was made. The following were the chief items of traffic: Grain, !) tons; minerals, 228’. tons; merchandise, lOd:* tons; sheep, 112 trucks; metal, 1,330 cubic yards; butter and cheese, 54. j tons; timber, (id,200 feet. Fares amounting to £3 Ids lid. EXOINEER’ S REPORT. Awahou Riding. —I have widened the corner over the Government drain on the Whirokino road, and also trimmed up a portion of the above road, and also No. 2 Line and No. d Line, with the rut-tiller. I have carted metal and repaired worst holes along the Fox tonShannon road, and have arranged with Mr IT. Behrent to cart the metal required between Marotiri and Foxton borough boundary for the sum of 8s per yard. General. —The stone crusher is now doing tirst-elass work again. We crushed during last month 1,330 yards of metal, and -the grade is much liner than was put out during the previous month. Another camp-ing-van is required to provide accommodation for men when employed at various works throughout the counlv.
