WAIMANGU ERUPTION.
TWO DEATHS. Rotorua, April 3. The disastrous eruption which took place in Waimaugu Valley in that portion known as Frying-pan Flat, early on Sunday morning, has claimed two victims, Airs McCormack, wife of the caretaker ,and their four-year-old son. The injuries the child received were principally to his hands and face, and the lower part, of his legs and feet. He was shielded to a great extent from a terrific blast of sand, mud, and steam by his mother. Mrs McCormack received the most serious injuries of the three. She was badly scalded in many parts of her body. It was in consequence of taking off her own clothing to protect her little j-on that she was so badly burnt. Mr McCormack’s condition does not give rise to any fears as to bis ultimate recovery. He was scalded on the face and hands and feet. Seen to-day, he was able to furnish a fairly dear, but brief, account of his experiences.
People who (Haim io have constant acquaintance with the Rotorua thermal regions over a great number of years, stale that they never before witnessed a more terrifying and awful inspiring spectacle than Sunday's eruption. The roiir of steam and the crash of falling rocks, some as large as a man’s body, was continuous throughout the whole day. Huge boulders, apparently red but, were hurled high into the air, where, meeting with the cold atmosphere, they exploded with deafening noise.
Gibraltar Rock is standing, but erosion is taking place, and it is feared that the familiar landmark will soon disappear. The hillside facing the Flat is Jailing oft' into the huge (-rater on Frying-pan Flat. It is not possible to ascertain the extent of (he crater, bat it is considered to lie a large one. Later. Frying-pan Flat is increasing in activity, a big shot taking place yesterday afternoon. The disturbance is visible from Rotorua, which is rapidly tilling with visitors. The funeral of the two victims, Mrs McCormack and her son, takes place this afternoon.
