CORRESPONDENCE.

[To the Editor.]

Sir.—Will you permit me to say something about the coming municipal election, and to express a few impressions. First of all, sir, I would like to say that of all the boroughs of a similar population to Foxton that I have knowledge of in this country, Foxton appears to be (he poorest in the sense of citizenship. What I mean is that very little interest is displayed in municipal a ll airs. How many Councillors could tell you, sir, anything of the Act under which (hey administer the affairs of the borough; the area of the borough and its thorofares; its rateable value; the cost of administration against revenue; its reserves and what is done in connection with them; whether Main .Street has more spent on it in maintenance than all the rest of the roads and footways in the borough ? There are other vital questions. But what I want to get at is that an intelligent vote cannot be recorded unless Councillors are well grounded in these important points. Surely a Mayor and nine men are capable of bringing down and currying out a defined policy of works for a. definite period, instead of bringing up matters in a haphazard way. Perhaps (his looseness is due to (he fact that Foxton is an industrial centre. Even so, a lead should bo given by some one. if we do not get a move on, sir, Foxton will be a suburb of Shannon in about a decade. Ido hope that our leading citizens will bestir themselves to action and so convert the new Council into a real live body of men determined to push Foxton into lino with other centres of equal population. Thanking you in anticipation. —1 am. etc., NEW COMER.
