SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the local Slate School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Kev. Bredin, Betty, Hussey, McColl, McMurray, and Woods. The head teacher reported that there was a slight falling oft' in attendance during the past month, owing to an epidemic of measles; the averages for the past four weeks were: 315.7, 311.8, 305, 311.8; tiie average for the whole period was 311, out of an average roll number of 300.5; the present roll is 304; the report: suggested that the asphalting of the front path he put in hand before the wet weather sets in, and that the head teacher would he pleased to organise an effort to supplement the donation of £2O for this work; the grounds and buildings were in a satisfactory condition. Tiie report was received. The secretary was authorised to write and thank the donor on behalf of the Committee for contribution above-mentioned. The Chairman slated that: if cinders were substituted for gravel the cost of carrying out the work of asphalting would he greatly reduced. He had inspected work of (hat nature locally and it appeared as effective as the gravel mixture. It was resolved that the Chairman and Mr McColl wait on (he contractors at the gas works and ascertain whether they would undertake (he work, and at what cost. It was deidded to apply to tin; Education Department through the Board for a subsidy of £ for £ on the donation. The Kev. Mr Bredin reported that lie and Mr Woods visited the school and went through the class-rooms and found everything in a satisfactory stale. It was resolved to ask the Board to substitute something more satisfactory than the present sinks and basins at I lie school for the convenience of the children. The sinks leaked, and caused an offensive smell, and the sharp edges of the tin basins were liable to cut the children's hands. It was resolved to draw the head teacher’s attention to the accumulation of dust in the school, particularly on the walls and shelves, and to take steps to sec that dusting is carried out after sweeping. Accounts were passed for payment subject to explanation. The Chairman and Mr Betty were appointed visitors for the mouth.
