THE BOROUGH WORK AND WAGES.
| To the Editor.] Sii'. —I w’iis glad 1 o notice in today's issue of the Maim wain Hernhl a bit of a nil) againsl our eouneillors by “Fair Deal.” Our borough work men recently asked for an increase in wages, just the same us any other workman would if he found he could not exist under a certain wage. They are told lo “get a. hustle on,” as if they weren’l untitled to a little more money unless they got a. spurt on with their work. Was the fireman at the gas works told to “get a move on” when he was granted an extra live- bob a week/ Could the councillors replace these two experienced roadmen and give the same wages under the present conditions.' 1 don't think il. I have noticed some of the work that these men have undertaken at. different times, which, if it had been given to tradesmen to do, would have cost the borough something to squeak about. Xu, sir, i think' the Council was wise when they granted this extra bob a day, but they rather spoilt their genero sity by asking for the extra bob’s worth of work, and the sooner the fair sex take charge of the borough affairs (as suggested in Tuesday’s issue) they may be able to express their opinions in open council, as they know the value of man and his abilities better than most of the sterner sex, thus realising Unit the maintenance gang do their money’s worth. I thank you for space, Mr Editor. —i am. etc., OX LOOKER. Eoxton, .March 22nd, 1917.
