Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 1917. THU MAYORALTY.

LT to the present (here is no indication that any citizen desires to offer his services for the .Mayoralty at the forthcoming' municipal elections. There is, of course, time eno ugh yet: to make a decision, and it cannot he said that Eoxton is bankrupt of men with the necessary qualifications to serve in such a position. We have in our mind’s eye at least half-a-dozen men eminently suitable in every respect to till the position with advantage to the borough, and credit to themselves. But in one or two cases, owing to the war and industrial difficulties, they are compelled to shoulder greater individual responsibilities than heretofore, and to add public service to their burden would be the last straw. This does not apply to all. There are others who could sacrifice time if they would, but they won't. A semi-private meeting was held last night to discuss (he position, and it was finally decided to wait upon the Mayor and urge him to reconsider his decision and consent to remain in otlice for a further term. Mr Fraser has put in a strenuous term of office, and is entitled to a rest, but. in view of all the circumstances he may be induced to consent to offer himself for a further term.
