A (‘(-(Minis amounting to £40!) 19s Id were passed for payment at last night’s Council meeting. Wednesday has been gazetted as the statutory half-holiday for the borough of Foxlon. Two horses recently impounded in the borough pound were ordered to be destroyed yesterday, morning. The latest additions to the telephone list are: S. W. Smith, ’Robinson Street, Xo. 102: W. D. Bauckham, Park Street, Xo. 103. .Mr Ait ken, of the local State school stall, was notified this'morning that be bad been drawn in the recent ballot. K. Wor. Bro. McFarJane, Prov. G.M.. will be in attendance at the local Masonic Lodge meeting this evening. The borough nuisance inspector reported at last night’s Council meeting that the borough was in a fair sanitary condition. Cr. (100. Whibley will not be a candidate for the Council at the forthcoming municipal election, having left the district to engage in flaxmilling at To A roll a. Mrs Bredin entertained the Presbyterian Ladies’ Social Guild and members of the congregation at an afternoon in the Sabbath school last Wednesday. A most enjoyable time was spent. At the Military Appeal Court at Palmerston on Saturday, the appeal of Xathan Hurst, labourer, Foxlon, a C2 man. was adjourned sine die. He will be liable to be called up at a later date if wanted.

Messrs W. H. Field, M.P. for Otaki, and G. A. Monk, Chairman of the Horowhenua County Council, elsewhere in this issue convene a meeting of farmers and others, on behalf of the National Efficiency Board, to be held at the Century Hall. Levin, on Friday next, Kith inst., at 11.15 a.m. The object of the meeting is to set up a committee of trustees to manage soldiers’ farms. Mr Thus. Moss, Commissioner for the Wellington Military District, will be present. All farmers throughout the district jshoiild endeavour to be present.

The death took place at Masterton on Sunday of Dr. Win. H. Hashing, the best-known medical man in the Wairarapa district, at the age of 75 years. The deceased was a native of Cornwall, England, and came to Xew Zealand in 18G3. He practised his profession at the Bluff, and later at Hokitika and Ross (on the West Coast). He took up Jus residence in Masterton in 1875. and had resided there ever since. In his later years he took up the study of radiography, and his services were much sought after by patients from all parts of the Dominion. Dr. Hosking was twice married. He leaves a widow, four sons and one daughter. His eldest son is Dr. Archer Hosking, of Master ton.

The borough ranger reported at last night’s Council meeting that he had impounded seven head of cattle and two horses; he had also “arrested" 17 head of cattle and one horse. Driving fees 9s. At last night’s Council meeting Cr McColl asked the Mayor for a return showing cost of tarring and sanding Main Street. The Mayor said the return would be furnished at the next Council meeting.

Miss Bert hold, who has tilled the position as assistant Town Clerk to the local borough Council for the past four years, has been appointed to a similar position on the Lower Hutt Borough Council. At last night’s meeting of the Council a vote of thanks and appreciation of Miss Berthold’s services was carried unanimously.

At last night's Council meeting Cr Coley stated (hat lie was sick and tired of complaining about hedges and trees encroaching 1 on the fool paths, yet nothing was done in the mailer, lie said a niacroearpa hedge was overhanging the footpath in Main Street, and at Ihe corner of .Johnston and Coley streets I lie trees spread across the footpath. It was decided to have the obstruct ions removed.

“There is not a better class of men to be found anywhere than the New Zealand non-commissioned officers," slated Professor Bedford, of (he Y.M.C.A. organisation, who has just returned from a visit to Bugland. “I know (hey are all picked men, and they show it. They have come up from the ranks, and their intellectual capacity is wonderful. I made friendships from among the non-commissioned men which will last a life-time."

Mayor Fraser is a stickler for correct procedure at Council meetings, and carries the business through with commendable expedition. Kvery opportunity is afforded Councillors to discuss motions, but irrelevancies are strictly barred. He dropped on a Councillor last night for talking across the (able instead of addressing the chair, and his diplomatic rebuke had a salutary effect. It’s a great pity that other chairmen of local bodies do not follow such an excellent example.
