Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 1917. WAR TIME AND RACING.
MW. LEE, M.l’.. thinks horse racing should cease whilst the war is on; and to emphasise Ins opinion ho withdrew from his Waeiny Childs Committee, which leads our Redding contemporary to comment as follows: —‘‘Most of (lie rogues and vagabonds (hat are arrested in country towns are ‘followers of the turf,' two such having been gaoled recently from Redding. And. if more evidence for Ihe prosecution were needed, it is provided, quite unconsciously hy I he sporting scribe of the Auckland Slur, who writes Ihuslypf the defiling of ‘the sport of kings.': ‘Although it is not generally known, it is understood that a sub-committee of the Auckland Racing Club has been busy for some time past taking evidence bearing on things generally in connection with the sport. Ror obvious reasons the meetings are of a private nature, but from what can be gathered some of the evidence lias been a bit of an eye-opener to ttie committee, and as a result it is a certainty that more than one race-goer will be notified that racing at Ellerslie can be carried on satisfactorily without his presence.’ If our newlyappointed National Efficiency Board has any power at all, it ought to cut racing right out of action for the war period.”
