HAWKE’S BAY SEAT.

SIR JOHN FINDLAY RETURNED. The election for the Hawke’s Bay seat rendered vacant by the death of the Hun. Dr. AlcNab took place on Thursday, and resulted in Sir John Findlay. K.C., being returned with a majority of 471 votes, fhe iinal figures are: — Sir J, (1. Findlay 2,035 H. lan Simson 2,104 A. L. De Fraser Informal 50 Total 4,858 Although Air Fraser’s name figured on the ballot paper it was there only because the technical formalities were not complied with in time, and he did not go to the poll, having consented to stand down in favour of Sir John Findlay. Ihe total names on (he roll were 8,478. SIR JOHN EINbLAY’S CAREER. Sir John George Findlay, K.C., was born at Dunedin, in 1802, and was educated at Scott's Academy, Hokitika, and the Otago University. He became an LL.B. in 1880, and an LL.D. in 1893. In 1887 he was admitted to the Bar, and in partnership with Air F. G. Dalziell practised his profession at Palmerston South. After leeinring on political science at Otago University, he removed lo Wellington, and entered into partnership with Sir Robert Stout. On the latter’s appointment as Chief Justice, Dr. Findlay and Air F. G. Dalziell again entered into partnership. On the death of the Hon. A. Pitt he accepted the portfolio of Attorney-General and Colonial Secretary in the Ward Administration. He was appointed K.C. in 1907, and for some years was a member of (lie Victoria College Council . On the retirement of the Hon. J. APGowan from the House of Representatives, Sir John (then Dr.) Findlay took the portfolio of Justice, in .March, 1911, he went with Sir Joseph Ward lo the imperial Conference. On his return he resigned Ids position as Leader of Hie Legislative Council,. AttorneyGeneral, and Minister of Justice, and contested the Parnell seat, hut was defeated. His retirement from political life was on 18th December, 1911.
