The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1917. THE BOROUGH OF SHANNON.
SHANNON is shortly to he lifted from the area of the Horowhenua County and (he administrative control of that governing body to the
dignity of a borough. The citizens have held public meetings whereat (he consensus of opinion was that necessary improvements in- the township which concerned the health and welfare of the inhabitants could not be carried out unless the centre had self-government. An enthusiastic committee gathered the necessary particulars as to population, and the boundaries were, outlined. Provided there is no serious objection from a majority of the townspeople and the county, (he request will be granted—in fact, it is now practically settled. The ratepayers are aware of, and quite willing to pay, the increase in rales for general and special administrative purposes. There are a number of public-spirited and capable men willing to undertake the important duties connected with self-govern-ment, and in this connection Shannon is fortunate in having the services of Mr P. Hennessy, chairman of the local Harbour Board, and an ex-May-or and Councillor of Foxton. If Mr Hennessy could be induced to occupy the Mayoral chair for the first term, his wide experience in local government affairs would be of incalculable benefit to the borough in its initial stages. Anyhow, we congratulate Shannon on its determination to go forward, and wish it every success.
