COAL LUMPERS STRIKE.
MAORI AND KITTAWA AEEECT-
AVellington, Eeb. 10,
Hardly has the trouble in connection with (he working of the cargo of various vessels in Wellington been overcome before the coallumpers have refused to work on two vessels, the coaling equipment of which they consider to be dangerous to life and limb. The vessels concerned are the Maori anil Kittawa, both of the Union Company’s licet. Yesterday the “coalies” declined to coal the Kittawa, and this morning they slopped work on the Maori, which readied port at about 7 a.m. from Lyttelton.
The cause of the whole trouble, as tar as can be ascertained, is the "Burton block," an appliance which although in use for many years past, and having the advantage of very quick working, is declared by the men to be highly dangerous. It is thought that the .Maori has sufficient coal in her bunkers to take her down to Lyttelton.
