The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1917. THE COMING MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

THE hi-ennial eleetion of Mayor and Councillors lakes place in April. We understand that our present worthy Mayor does not intend to seek re-election, and that several of the present Councillors also inland to retire. A resume of their stewardship will be referred to in a subsequent issue. In the meantime it is desirable! to arouse public interest in matters municipal, and to endeavour to enlist the services of the best men in the community to come forward and propound a definite policy on borough affairs for the ensuing two years. The question of passing accounts, road and footpaths maintenance and such minor matters can be left in the hands of the staff, hut there are other matters of more vital importance which require initiative, upon which Eoxton’s prosperity and the welfare of its citizens depend, which require, careful thought and action. Upon these matters we require the best mental talent in the borough. We refer to the vita! question of water and drainage. The fact of Shannon being merged into a boro-

ugh, one of its lirst public acts will be to instal water and drainage, and probably Eoxt on will be asked to join in the scheme under more con-

crete and favourable terms than previously suggested. The port and seaside, gas works and public reserves require attention. So that there is plenty of useful public work ahead which requires (dose attention by our must capable citizens provided they can be galvanised into action. We hope none of the positions, under the circumstances, will be allowed to go begging this year, hut that a real live interest will be infused into municipal politics as a result of the forthcoming elections.
