The following tale is a favourite one in the trenches. A certain bright young spirit was hooked for a slight abdominal operation. When informed of this he surprised the surgeon by inquiring if a clergyman might be present. “A clergyman?” echoed the man of the scalpel. “Why, I don’t think it’s its serious as all that.” “But I shall have to be opened, shan’t 1, doctor?” persisted the patient. “Certainly,” was the puzzled reply, “but why the padre?” “Why," declared the sufferer, solemnly, but with a twinkle in his eye, “1 thought 1 should like to be opened with prayer!”
