HOUSEHOLD HINTS.

To avoid the expense of rubber gloves a good substitute is inade by dipping old gloves into hot linseed oil; this renders them waterproof. When mixing whitewash, add a good handful of common salt. This makes the whitewash adhere to the walls and prevents rubbing off. When baking fish, never forget to line the pan with waxed paper; then there will be no disagreeable sticky dish to wash afterwards. To prevent salt becoming damp and lumpy, when tilling the bottles add several grains of rice; these will absorb the moisture and the salt will kee}) dry and tine. When making oatmeal porridge place the oatmeal in cold water, and bring .slowly to the boil. This gives a better flavour than when made with boiling water. Tablecloths and sheets should be taken off the hue before they are quite dry, then folded smoothly, and

laid on one side to be ironed the next day.

To keep crochetwork from ripping, put a small safety-pin in the last stitch. The work may be laid down or handled without any danger that the stitches will be pulled out.

To remove match scratches from white paint, rub with half a lemon, then wash with a paste of whiting and water. Dry thoroughly, and the marks will disappear. Coloured handkerchiefs should be soaked in cold salt water for a short- time before they are washed. This will prevent the colours from running or fading.

When a knife has been used to cut onions, wipe it with a damp cloth and rub it briskly with coarse salt. The objectionable smell will then entirely disappear.
