THE HEMP MARKET.
The demand from London continues keen, but oilers cannot be ma.de from Mew Zealand owing to the want of shipping space. At tiie present lime America is buying freely, but is not prepared to pay as high as the London quotations. A fair amount of shipping space is available for the Slates, and this question does not present any immediate dillieulties, in fuel, it is anticipated that (lie Dominion hemp stores will be practically cleared out during (he current month. The Americans are- not keen for low point, fair, and have made a difference of £2 per (on hetwedi this grade and high point; fair, its agaiusl a margin of £1 only on (he London market. Most of the mills in New Zealand are, where possible, working at high pressure, with the result that with the increased production there is a larger percentage of lower quality. The prices offering at present are the best in the history of the industry, and the prospects (outside the shortage of labour) are good.
The following is the High Commissioner’s report for this week, the first message having been mutilated: The market is linn and prices continue to advance. .Manila market is excited by speculative demands due to fear that supplies will be short. New Zealand, business dull, little offering, quotations are nominal. •January-March shipment, good fair £O2, fair £OO, government graded fair Manila £72 coarse £O-1. The output from Manila for the week was 10,000 bales.
