Peter Scott Ramsay, president of (lie Anti-Conscription League, who appeared on remand at Christchurch to-day on charges of seditious utterances, made a long speech, which was cut short by Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., who said the speed) was against recruiting. He sentenced the accused to eleven months’ imprisonment, concurrent, on each of two charges, and said he did not give a year’s sentence, as there would be a question then whether the accused would still come within the Reserve. Mr S. G. Raymond, K.C., .-add the military authorities could take Ramsay almost any time to camp, as he had been drawn in the ballot. He made that statement because a lot of these men thought they would be safer in gaol than in Flanders.
