A statement was made by Mr H. TV. Forster, Financial Secretary to the War Office, that from July Ist to the end of November the award of the following honours for gallantry in the field had been gazetted: —
Victoria Cross, 77; Distinguished Service Order, 333; Military Cross, 2,309; Distinguished Conduct Medal, 12,430; Meritorious Service Medal, 651; total, 17,367. Bars to D.S.O, 9; bars to M.C., 55; bars to D.C.M., 36; bars to M. Medal, 67; total, 167.
Replying to a question whether some more dignified way of presenting the Military Medal than sending it by registered post could not bo adopted, Mr Forster stated that instructions were issued some time ago that the presentation of decorations for gallantry awarded to warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men should be made whenever possible in a public manner. They could be presented at local gatherings by prominent citizen's if desired.
