TIRED OF LIFE.
THREE WOMEN ATTEMPT SUICIDE.
Three women of various ages appeared in the Wellington Magistrate's Court, before Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., on Tuesday, to answer charges of attempting to commit suicide.
The young woman Phyllis Mellis, who created a mik^sensation by deliberately taking a quantity of poison in Cuba Street on 30th December last, had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting suicide. Inspector Hendry stated that the defendant had been convicted on two oecosaions for drunkenness. The Magistrate committed Mellis to the Salvation Army Homo for a period of twelve months.
111-health, combined with overindulging in drink, were stated to be responsible for the downfall of Agnes Mercer, who attempted to take her life early this month by slashing her wrist with a knife. Mercer,
whose age was given as 57 years, was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when (tailed upon, on condition a prohibition order was issued against her.
Somewhat unusual features were disclosed in the case of Hilda Koherstein, who attempted to take her life at Carterton on the Bth instant. Defendant, left, a note at the house at which she was staying, stating that she intended to do away with herself. She then disappeared, and a search was instituted, with the result that, the woman was found in some scrub suffering from the effects of the poison. An order was made similar to that in the case of Mellis.
