SPORTING.

POXTON MEETING.

The Poxton Racing Club’s annual race meeting opened yesterday in ideal weather. There was a record attendance, the special trains being well patronised, and a large number of visitors also travelled by motor. The sporting public from all the surrounding district was well represented. The track, although somewhat on the hard side, war; under the circumstances, good. The racing throughout the day was interesting, some of the finishes being very close. The race for the Cup was a particularly good one, and the judge was unable to separate the first two horses, Kurapai and Ladii'y. The management of the meeting left nothing to be desired, everything going off -without a hitch, and the secretary, stewards and committee are to be congratulated on the very complete arrangements made. The day’s racing ms free from accidents, with the exception of a fall in the Hurdles, Ml. Victoria coming down at the last fence when he looked all over a winner. Fortunately neither the jockey or horse were hurt. Mr Currie, stipendiary steward, was in attendance, but -his duties were fairly light, only two enquiries of a minor nature being held during the day, which necessitated cautioning a jockey for crossing over too soon. The starting of Mr Angus Keith in seven of the eight races left nothing to be desired, but in the other race, the Dash Hack, the despatch of the horses was very bad indeed. The catering arrangements were in the hands of Messrs Langley Bros. Mr A. M. Wright, the local trainer, was v£ry successful, Kurapai, trained by him and owned by Mr A. D. Scott, Oroua Downs, running dead heat for first place in the Cup with Ladify; Poeman, owned and trained by Mr Wright, winning the Dash Hack, and Lady Edith, owned by Messrs Broad and Ingram, finished second in the Maiden. Other Poxton horses to finish in a place were Master Aloutoa, third in the Cup, and Princess Moutoa, second in the Anniversary Handicap, both horses being owned by Mr F. S. Easton and trained by Mr D. McCauley. Investment on the totalisator was brisk, the sum of £18,058 being handled during the day, as against £15,576 on the first day last year, an increase of £2,482. The following are the results: — HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. One mile and threequariers. 2 Mr ■). S. Adams’ .Arlington (L. Traill) 1U 1 1 Mr J. Hurley's Sir Fisher (A. In this race Kurapai, Joey and Papatere deelined their engagements, and the public made Sir Fisher a little better favourite than Arlington. From the start Mt. Victoria was soon in front, followed by AVirokino and Arlington. At the second fence Darkum ran off. Passing the stand the first time round, the order was: Mt. Victoria, Arlington, Sir Fisher, AVirokino, and this order was maintained until the last fence, when Alt. Victoria, who looked all over a winner, fell. Coming up the straight, Sir Fisher made a great run, but was only able to get within a length of Aldington. AVirokino was a very indifferent third. Time: 3 min 20 secs.

This order was maintained into the straight, whore Need —who was well hacked —came with a rattle and romped home an easy win.
