Gisborne, Jan. 22. A heavy rainstorm at Tokomaru Bay caused floods.

A young man named Lewis, aged 21, a carpenter, went out at 5 o’clock to look at the Hood. The hank gave way, and he was drowned. A child named Hanlon, aged 18 months, was also drowned. The father had handed the child to the mother whilst they were escaping from the house. The mother tripped and fell, and (he child was washed away.

A number of small bridges were washed away, and stock drowned. It is reported that ten inches of rain fell inland.
