SHOOTING SENSATION.

A VIOLENT STRUGGLE,

MAN FIRES AUTOMATIC RE-

VOLVER

Te Kuiti, Jan. 19

A man mimed William Richards, 44 years of age, an engine driver working near Taihape, hoarded the train at Tanmarnnni. Guard Duncan, on checking the tickets, found that Richards laid none, and advised him that he would be lined sixpence. Richards strongly objected but eventually paid the amount and settled into his seat. Some time after, leaving Taumarunui he walked on to the platform of a carriage, and leaning over, tired into the carriage he had just left with an automatic revolver, the shot narrowly escaping a lady passenger. The guard rung for the police at Te Kuiti, and Sergeant Eecles met the train. The guard pointed to the man, and the sergeant asked that an interview be held in the station yard. The sergeant said that a police officer was going to search him, and the man and the sergeant closed. During a violent struggle, Richards tired at the sergeant, but missed him. Assistance was called from amongsl the civilians, and Richards was placed in the lock-up. He appeared before Mr Kawson, R.M., charged with discharging a loaded revolver at .Sergeant Eecles, with intent to do grievous bodily harm. A remand of eight days was granted. Other charges are pending.
