THE PACIFIC AND SUBMARINES.

The development of the submarine has greatly increased its powers, and lias made possible operations in waters which, at the beginning of the war, would have been regarded as quite outside its range. A naval correspondent, writing recently in a London newspaper, stated that German submarines frequently travel from Heligoland to Madeora, a distance of 2,800 miles, before meeting supply vessels; also’ that a German submarine recently remained at sea for 55 days, travelling in that time 11,000 miles. In certain quarters the opinion is held that the Pacific may yet know the perils which U boats have created in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Japan has decided to arm hexmerchantmen, a step which seems to indicate that the allies recognise the possibility. In discussing the question, the Sydney Daily Telegraph mentions cex-tain incidents which might lend colour to this opinion. A few weeks ago a steamer which might easily have been a submarine supply ship, sailed from a South American port. The fact

that the crew of the vessel was composed of a type of man not usually found in the forecastle is asserted to be significant, the suggestion being that they are German naval reservists, and that the ship is bound for some point among the islands which has been fixed as a rendezvous.
