The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 1917. OUR SEASIDE RESORT.

WE are pleased to report dial there is a movement afoot to raise funds for the purpose of making the local seaside resort more .attractive to visitors. It is generally admitted that the Foxton seaside is one of the best and safest for bathing and boating in the Dominion, but so far nothing has been done in the matter of beautifying the resort by planting suitable trees and covering the adjacent sand drift with marram grass. By Ihe judicious expenditure of a few pounds annually our seaside resort could, in a few years, be converted into a well-sheltered and shady glade. The controlling authority is the local Harbour Board, but all its administrative energy will for some time be taken up with the Railway Department in the acquisition of the wharf and dredging the river. It is, however, not unmindful of the conveniences of its tenants at the seaside, and would assist any public effort to popularise the endowment which in the years to come will provide a substantial revenue lit Ihe Board and Foxton. In the meantime, therefore, it is up lo the local public- and tenants to assist the Board, and themselves, by doing what they can to carry out necessary improvements to further popularise the holiday resort. For instance, next Arbor Day the local school children could combine pleasure with usefulness in planting marram grass, shrubs, and trees over a given area, and continue the work each year. Dressing sheds are also needed. The matter of improvements should not be left to visitors who spend a few weeks at the seaside during the summer holidays. The resort is a valuable asset to Foxton, and (he latter should awaken to its responsibilities. A small committee has been set up, with power lo add to its number, to receive and administer funds to carry out necessary improvements. We hope local prominent citizens will link up with the committee and make it a real live body, and backed by (he assistance of the Board, Manawalu County Council, and local Borough Council, good and lasting work could be accomplished in making the seaside one of the most attractive health resorts in the Dominion.
