The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1917. ROAD OBSTRUCTING AT THE SEASIDE.
WE again direct the Manawatu County Council's attention to the blockage of the road just past Langley’s accommodation house at the seaside by motorists. It is a common practice for motorists to pull up and leave their cars obstructing traffic at this spot, instead of pulling right oil the road or driving on through the cutting to the commodious river foreshore. While the road is thus obstructed by stationary cars those who desire to drive past are compelled to plough through drift sand, and to do this causes much inconvenience. Further, there is always a danger of a serious collision by drivers coming through the cutting from the foreshore. Minor accidents have already been reported. Yesterday a car load coming through the cutting came head on to a motor car (No. 573 P.N.) standing stationery and empty in the middle of the road. When the driver, who was conversing with people on the roadside, was politely asked to remove the car, he became insolent, and subsequently, after a threat of proceedings, grudgingly 7’emoved the car to the
side. Of course, there are many other similar cases, and until the Council takes some action the memace to public safety will continue. The Harbour Board is powerless to act, as the road is under the jurisdiction of the Manawatu County Council. We would suggest that the Council immediately erect a warning at the locality against obstructing the road, and would urge aggrieved persons to take private proceedings against offenders.
