Fortunately the mouths of the rivers were free from bars, but on account of the unprecedented amount of water running, the rivers are unable to cope with the heavy volume. With the crops still ungarnered, the devastating result of an inundation can be easily imagined. Hastings reports that the rivers are rising rapidly. If the rain continues much longer, all the low-ly-ing country will certainly he hooded. In some parts of the country a good deal of hay is still out, ami there seems little prospect of saving it.
