BE READY,
The Defence Minister stated on Thursday that the Military Service Boards had no special directions from, the Government or from him as to hoAv they should deal Avith applications for exemption. They Avere expected to deal Avith cases on their oavu responsibility, according to the evidence. Referring to the granting of temporary exemptions to numbers of men, Mr Alton said that it was perhaps prudent for the Boards to be a little more generous in this respect at the beginning of the .scheme than Avould be possible later. “Noav the scheme is in operation,” he said, “the men in the First Division ought lo know that they will be balloted for at any time, and it is their duty to have their affairs in order, and to be in a position to go into camp at shox*t notice.
