ALLEGED SEDITION.

We I lino-ton, Dee. 22.

In the Magistrate's Court to-day the Crown proceeded with the charges of sedition against Peter Fraser and Thus. Brindle, two prominent Socialists. The Court was crowded, and Air Riddell, S.M., presided. Both pleaded not guilty, and conducted their own defence. The evidence for the Crown was of a formal nature. Defendants addressed the Court at considerable length, claiming that their speeches were perfectly just died under section 10S of the Crimes Act, which slates that it is not unlawful to attempt to procure the correction of errors and defects in the Constitution so long as lawful means are adopted. They thought the repeal of the Alii it ary Service Act was in the interest of the community, because it had aroused feelings of hatred. Both claimed that their speeches contained statements of fact only, and as such could not he regarded as seditious. The .Magistrate said he would read through the whole of the speeches and give Ids decision tomorrow.

SENTENCES OF TWELVE M( LNTHS.

Wellington, This Morning

The .Magistrate this morning sentenced Fraser and Brindle to twelve months' hard labour.

THORN SENTENCED TO 12 MONTHS.

Auckland, Yesterday. Thorn was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labour.
