NEWSPAPER OFFICE RAIDED.
SEARCH BY THE POLICE
ARREST OF JAMES THORN
A raid was made on the “Maoriland Worker’’ office, at Wellington, by a, party of police, on Tuesday. The detachment engaged in this special duty consisted of detectives and uniformed police, nine in number. A thorough search was made of the building, and the police took away with them a quantity of literature or papers. It is understood that the search was made in the expectation of finding in the “Worker’'' office certain pamphlets, circulars, other printed matter, or papers which have to do with the anticonscription campaign alleged to have been conducted by the paper, or by a certain group of persons through the paper office. The police would say nothing on Tuesday about the nature of the matter seized. It is not announced yet whether any further proceedings will be taken. This question will probably be decided after the papers have been examined by some officer qualified to Judge as to whether they are incriminating or not. A search wa> made also of another set of rooms in the city regularly frequented by Socialists. The police took into custody James Thorn, a well-known Socialist, and editor of the country workers’ page of (he Maoriland Worker. He was arrested on a charge of having made certain utterance alleged to be seditious at Auckland on December 10th. On this charge he will have to stand trial at Auckland, and he went north in custody by the train last niglit.
