MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The adjourned annual meeting and the regular meeting of the Manawavu County Council were held at Sanson on Tuesday. Present: Crs. Sir dames Wilson. \V. -1. Phillips, 11. H. Hunt, Strode 1 ’enny, W. E. Barber. B. Gray ami J. Hammond. Sir dames W ilson was re-elected chairman. A deputation from the Glen Oi’oua Dairy Co. waited on the Council and asked for a concession of freight charges on the tram for hut ter and cheese. Discussing the request, Cr Gray said it would save a length of road very much it the butter and cheese were sent by the tram. He urged that the tram, being the property of tin* ratepayers, should be run in Ilnur interest. The Chairman said that they must not benefit one section of the ratepayers at the expense of the whole county. After going exhaustively into the various freights, iho Council decided to make a reduction on the freights referred to as follows; Oroua, Downs 3 s per ton, Whale Line 3s Od, liongotea As.
The Council of Agriculture wrote asking the Council to give ]j s t 0 f the six worst weeds on arable hind and also on grass lands. —The following list was made: Arable —Calilornian thistle {especially on river bed), tat hen, penny royal, sparry, agi'ostis alba. Grass land. —Willow weed, tar weed, penny royal, Californian thistle, ragwort, wing thistle, blackberry, goat’s rue (on river beds). air M est claimed compensation for an accident caused through his horse shying at pipes left on the road. The result was that a gig was overturned and smashed, and a lady’s arm broken. —The Clerk to make inquiries. The tender of Mr E. Algar, at Cl Ms per chain, was accepted for forming and metalling the Lake Load. The Engineer reported as follows ; Ivawa Kawa and Awahou Ridings.—f have widened and straightened a sharp bend on the Palmeivs-lon-Eoxton road, and it will be necessary to soil and metal this portion of road to prevent the wind (rutting into the sand. The metal is already delivered, and eonld ho put on the road at a small cost.
Awahou Hiding.—Repairs have been effected,to the Eoxton Beachroad, the Ixari Kari, No. 1 Line, and Elkins-.Motuiti roads, and also to the Foxlon-Shannon road, in the shape of filling in holes, cutting lupins, and general road maintenance work. The Tramway Manager reported as follows: —■ The t rattle was good, the chi of items being: Minerals 2021 tons merchandise 15!1! ions, manure 12!) 1 tons, timber 14,700 ft., wool ISS hales, cheese 40] tons, metal 015 cubic yards. Fares amounted to £2 2s 9d. A credit balance of ,€O3 5s 2d is shown for the month’s working. Orona Downs private siding.— On Friday last a knuckle pin on the left hand side rod of the “Maiuiwa.tiv’' was broken whilst the engine was in the siding. I would suggest that the end of the siding he pulled and the curve eased. Twelve trucks were put into the siding during the month, necessitating 21 trips into the siding. Demurrage. —The stationmaster Eoxton, has again applied for payment of demurrage on trucks..
