MAN HEAVILY FINED.
UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY.
What is understood to be the tirst case of its kind in Now Zealand came before the Magistrate’s Court at: Wellington on Saturday, when a young man named William Denis Quill was charged with committing a serious breach of the War Regulations. It was alleged that Quill, being a person over the age of 15 years, a I tempted to leave the Dominion by a Home liner without first, obtaining a permit as required by (he Regulations. The accused was found on hoard a liner by DetectiveSergeant Rawie and Sergeant King, and when arrested lie was almost penniless.
When charged with the offence before Mr W. G. Riddell, W.AI., Quill admitted his guilt, and informed the Court that he bad enlisted, bat had not been accepted. According to the police, tin* accused had a number of previous convict inns against him.
The Alagistrate warned Quill (bat the offence was looked upon by the Legislature as a very serious one, punishable by a line of £IOO or a, sentence of twelve months’ imprisonment. He li.ved (In* tine at £lO, in default one month’s imprisonment.
