DRIVERS’ DISPUTE.

INCREASE GRANTED IN SETTLEMENT. The Hon. W. H. Herries (Minister for Labour) on Saturday handed to the press the following Cabinet minute (dated November 30th, 191 G) covering the terms of settlement in the dispute between members of the New Zealand Drivers Federation and employers upon which Cabinet was asked to arbitrate ;

“Whereas the representatives of the Master Drivers and the representatives of the New Zealand Drivers’ Federation have met; in conference, and have by letters addressed to the Hon. the Minister for Labour, dated November 29th, 191(i, signed respectively by Mr E. A. Craig, chairman of the Employers’ Conference, and Air A. Parlanc, general secretary of the New Zealand Drivers’ Federation, agreed to submit

unreservedly certain matters in dispute to Cabinet for decision, and have further agreed to abide by the decision of Cabinet. “Now therefore Cabinet hereby decides as follows: “1. That the awards of the Arbitration Court, dated October 28(h, 191(1, which settle (be conditions of employment of drivers shall stand unaltered with regard to wages and other conditions. “2. That a war bonus of six shillings per week shall be paid to onehorse drivers in addition to the minimum wage of .€2 12s per week provided by the said awards of the Arbitration Court, and a similar sum of six shillings per week shall he paid to two-iiox-se drivers in addition to the minimum wage of £2 lb’s provided by the said awards of the Arbitration Court. Thus the wages of one-horse drivers and two-horse drivers, with the addition of the war bonus, shall not be less than £2 18s and £3 2s per week respectively.

“3. That in addition to the miSiinnini wages of £2 15s, £2 17s fid and £3 per week awarded by the Arbitration Court in the said awards to the drivers of three different classes of motor vehicles, a war bonus of 5s per week shall be paid. Tims the weekly wages of these drivers together with the war bonus, shall not be less than £3, £3 2s fid and £3 5s respectively. “4. That the arrangement embodied in this minute shall continue for the period of the present war and for three months thereafter.

_ “5. That; the arrangement set forth in this minute shall operate as from Monday, November 27th, lOlfi.

“C. That this decision of Cabinet and the arrangement set forth in this minute shall hind all the parties to the several awards of the Arbitration Court, dated October 28th, 1916.

“7. That should any question arise as to the meaning of any part of this minute, it shall he referred to the Hon. the Minister for Labour for decision.”
