ANZACS IN EGYPT.
HIGH PRAISE FOR THE AIOUNTED MEN. London, Dec. 1. A despatch from General Sir Archibald Alurray (Commander-in-chief in Egypt), dated Ist October, covers the operations in Egypt from Ist dune to 30th September. Sir Archibald Alurray, in detailing the operations at Katia, praises the work of the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Infantry and the Australian flight Horse in observing and harassing (lie enemy’s advance. “The complete result of-the operations was the decisive defeat of eighteen thousand of (tie enemy, including fifteen thousand rides. Four thousand were taken prisoner. The total enemy casualties were aliout nine thousand. Major. General H. G. Chauvel (Australia) proved himself a resolute and resourceful cavalry leader. The brant of the whole lighting fell upon the Australian and New Zealand mounted men. J cannot speak 100 highly of the gallantry, steadfastness, and untiring energy those tine troops have shown.
“Patrolling duties along (he west(‘rn edg'd of the; Canal zone wove entrusted lo two Australian squadrons. The whole'force displayed ilie greatest tael and resource, with the result, that the western Canal zone can be said to he free of all unauthorised persons.” The despatch draws attention to the devotion of the Australian and New Zealand Nursing Services. A subsequent despatch mentions Colonels Chanvel, Chaytor, lioyston, Ant ill, Meredith, Walshe, Wilson, Downes, Culler, Onslow, Maygar, Grant, Dixon, and ('roll (Australia), and Colonels Mackesy, Findlay, and Meldrum (New Zealand), and also ninety-live officers and men and eight nurses, and twenty-one New Zealand, officers and four nurses.
