ONE-ARMED MAN.
GETS NOTICE TO SERVE
“Leonard Frank Pearce, fanner, Oroua county. —Take notice you have been selected by lot for service with the Expeditionary Force by ballot, gazetted 23rd inst. Notice and form of appeal by registered post. —Discipline.” The above is the text of a telegram whieh Mr L. F. Pearce, of Maldno, has received from the Defenee authorities. Its meaning is clear.
Mr Pearce is a member of a very well-known family in the district. He has a brother chairman of Hie Oroua County Council and another brother Chairman of the KiwiVea County Council. He is I / years ot age, twice married, and lias two sons, the elder of whom Iv.m been in camp for some months, and is shortly to sail for the front. These fuels should have heed sufficient to protect Mr Pearce from (ho risk of a hallo] with the First Division men. Bui there Is another. He has only one arm. In tilling up the National Register card, Mr Pearce gave these particulars. Still, he Jias been drawn in the first ballot.
