SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Fox-* ton State School Committee Avas held on Tuesday evening. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, Hussey, McColl, and Me Murray (secretary). Apologies lor absence were received from Kev. J. H. Bredin and F. Woods. The secretary reported a credit balance of £2 Is lOd. An estimate of cost for asphalting the trout path and assembly was submitted by Mr Is ye. The Chairman said the estimate! exceeded what he had anticipated it. would cost, but Mr Nye had assured him that the quantities of metal and tar had been carol ally assessed, and he would not guarantee that the work would be carried out for the sum stated. The other alternative was to asphalt the path only. If was resolved that the estimate be submitted to Mrs Austin-Johnston, who had consented to bear half cost, and with her approval to call for tenders for the work. The Chairman reported that the Board, in effecting alterations to the head teacher’s residence, had not made
provision for hot water service, but would include same provided the Committee subscribed half-cost. The head teacher had consented to organise an effort for this purpose, and also to assist the Committee’s finances. Under these circumstances he had informed the Board that the Committee would contribute half-cost, although it was a necessary work', the whole cost of which, should he borne by the Board. The action of (lie Chairman was endorsed. The head teacher reported as follows; —Attendance: The averages for the past four weeks wore, 3Hi.!), 325, 319.4, 328.2; the average for the whole period was 322.3 out of an average roll number of 3(14: the present roll number is 302. The teacher also asked for an expression of opinion from the ( ommittee re the Board’s scheme of collecting by school children for patriotic purposes, and added, “Other committees, e.g., Palmerston X., have disapproved. The proposal is to sell penny ‘comfort cards,’ collect bottles, sackc, etc., and also to solicit donations, fox* which receipts are given. I wrote to the Board, pointing out that wo have recently made an effort, £95 being netted, while in all about £l7O has been collected by the school children for patriotic purposes. The Board, while acknowledging the good work done, wishes us to take up the new scheme.’. After some discussion, the Committee x-esolved to inform the head teacher that while it bad no desire to throw cold water on the Board’s scheme, it did not approve of boll to and sack collecting by the children, but bad no objection to the oilier system of raising funds by the children for patriotic purposes. Accounts were passed for payment subject to being in order. Alessvs Ab-Murray and Perreau were appointed visitors for the month.
