The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1916. FOXTON AND THE CENSUS.
IT will be noticed by the local census ret arms recently published in this paper, that the population of. .Poxton bias increased by IMb since the taking of the previous census, some live* years ago. The increase is evidence of quiet progress. During the; period there has not been any st art ling developments in (ho borough —a few new residences have been erected, and at present there/is a demand for suitable dwellings'. Poxton is an industrial centre, and depends almost entirely npc.*n Hie tlaxniilling industry. If tin-* bottom should fall out of the hemp industry Poxton would slump, unless the adjacent country was still more closely settled and made more productive than at present. The port, however, is n good standby, and when the Harbour Board conn*s into its own, it will assist to keep the borough going. The seaside continues to attract increasing numbers of people each year, and probably in the near .future there will he heller means of communication from Poxton to this popular resorl. Outside this thoro is nothing to attract people to Poxton lor purely residential purposes. It is pleasing to note, however, that, steady progress has been made during tin* past, live years, and that no ellort should be spared on Hie part of Hie local authority to keep the town abreast of Hie limes.
