"CLEAN UP” AND “FAINT UP.”
A “CLEAN-UP” and “paint-up” campaign has been started at Levin. A public meeting was recently hold to inaugurate the scheme, the moving spirits being Messrs K. Aitken and Matheson. Mr Aitken explained that it was inteddod to organise the association in such a way that there would he sub-com-mittees to attend to different matters, such as streets, back yards, cleaning up dangerous places and lire prevention, dealing with the fly pest and disposal of garbage, sanitation, etc. It also was intended to interest the schoolchildren in the mailer. Improvement and the cleaning up of vacant sections was another point that would he attended to, and also inquiry as to what methods people had at hand to dispose of garbage. Those who had not proper tins for it would ho supplied with them, and the garbage removed. The most important part of the whole scheme was to give it publicity and get the public interested in it and educate them regarding the benefits that would resull to them as individuals and the town in general if the scheme were (aken up properly and carried out. Mr Matheson said the proposal was an American idea started hy a man named Clark who threw out the suggestion firs I in Ids newspaper, ll made such progress (hat no less (ban 4,900 towns in America had formed “clean-up and paint-up” associations. The committees to deal with the various matters would report regularly to the executive. The objects of the campaign would be made public through the press, and also hy means of speakers and tin 1 clergy would probably be asked Jo assist in this way, and the school teachers to explain it to the
school children. They also intended to organise the business-men and enlist their assistance. The committee would supply them with advertising blocks. It was not intended to make the scheme expensive. The mttin source of inconut would he concerts, etc. Committees, with chairmen, were set up as follows; Street, backyard, and vacant lots. Rev. \V. if. K. Abbey; public dumps and carting, Mr T. Broome; Hy pest, garbage disposal and sanitary committee, Mr C. S. Keedwell; dangerous places and fire prevention, Mr G. P. Brown; public speakers, Mr B. R, Gardener; school children’s co-operation, Mr J. McIntyre; women’s organisation, Mrs \V. M. Clark; finance and publicity Messrs Aitken and Matheson; district organisation, Mr G. Henderson.
The promoters of the scheme are to be commended, and other towns, will watch the experiment. Of course, the .Municipal Corporations Act provides (he machinery whereby nil things proposed to he done hy the society can he carried out hy the Council. But any Council would welcome the operations of such a society, and give it official backing. Anyhow, good luck to the Levin organisation, the operations of which wc will watch and record for Foxton’s benefit.
