TROOPSHIP'S PERILOUS EXPERIENCE. Dunedin, Oct. 20. It is understood that a transport wilierli arrived at Port Chalmers today had a perilous experience during t lit; voyage from a European port to a landing station iu the Near Fast. She had about 1,500 troops aboard, and the vessel was convoyed by a small escort. The convoy had steamed a short distance ahead when oil was noticed on the surface of the water. The back of a torpedo was seen almost immediately, but the captain seized the wheel hud swung (he vessel sharply round, the torpedo passing a considerable distance astern. Nothing mure was seen of the submarine.
