KAISER AT COLOGNE.
The “Kolnische Volszeitung” gives the following highly-coloured account of a recent visit by the Kaiser to Cologne while he was passing from the Western to the Eastern front: —“The Kaiser went, from the railway station to the Cathedral on foot, and though he was dressed in a plain grey field uniform like the members of his suite who were accompanying him, someone recognised him, and the news spread like wild-fire through Cathedral Square and the adjoining streets that the Kaiser was in the cathedral. In a moment a crowd gathered from all sides, and when the Kaiser came out of the cathedral an unforgettable scene was enacted. There was a short burst of wildly enthusiastic cheering. Then a solemn hush fell upon the crowd, and all the noises of the streets were silenced. Rich and poor uncovered their heads, and women, without distinction of class, greeted (lie War Lord with waving handkerchiefs. The Kaiser was obviously affected by this hearty greeting, and thanked I lie crowd. While the Imperial party was returning to the railway station, the crowd, without any action by the police, who were not even present, respectfully stood aside and waved greetings to the Kaiser along his entire passage. At the station the scene was repeated, and there were tears in many eyes as the Kaiser, standing at the window of his railway carriage, made his farewell speech to the thousands who had gathered to see him off.”
