THE KHAKI SPIRIT.
Discussing the unselfish spirit which led men to the war, the Montreal Star, in a. recent article, deplored the lack of evidence of the same patriotism in peace time. “Can we not,” it asks, “harness some of that unselfish and truly patriotic spirit to the service of our civil life, and find men willing to make sacrifices for the good of the nation under the tamer conditions of peace"? If for every hundred young men who have offered their lives for Canada during this war, we could find at home just one man —say, beyond the military age —who would offer his time and energies for Canada, what a different public life we would see in this country! It is suggested that we should make the next Parliament a khaki Parliament. That is a suggestion that the. gratitude of our people to their soldiers and our admiration for their heroism-is very likely to bring intd; effect. Bur cannot we do even better than that ? Cannot we make our public life fog the future khaki in spirit —that is, actuated and inspired by that same devotion to the needs of the nation whieh has sent so manv of our brave lads into khaki?”
