MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Tuesday. Present : Crs Sir Jas. Wilson (chairman), W. .). Phillips, IV. .Strode, Penny, B. Gray, \V. E. Barber, .1. Hammond. A letter from the Pahiat.ua. County Council stated it was proposed to include the Manawatu County in the area contributing to the cost of the upkeep of the Gorge road. —It was decided to emphatically protest against any inclusion, and the Chairman, with the Clerk and Engineer, were asked to watch the interests of the Council before the Commission. Land and Survey Department wrote, saying the ferry reserve, section 51, was vested in the Crown. -—lt was decided to make application to have the reserve vested in the Council.
'flie Council agreed to increase the salary of Mr G. Hickford, County Overseer, by £45 a. year. Members gave it as their opinion that Mr Hickford was a. very capable officer, and his work had considerably increased during the past few years. TREASURER’S REPORT. Bank balances. —General account, dr., £5,132 3s 2d. Loan account, cr., £7(5(5 7s 4d. Riding accounts. —Available for expenditure to March 31st next: Saudon £(138 11s Id, Mt. Stewart £2(17 3s Bd, Waitohi £421 Ss 3d, Rongotea. £(542 4s 9d, Carnarvon £478 Os lid, Kawa.ka.wa. £44(5 4s lid, Awabon £143 (is sd. TRAMWAY MANAGER'S REPORT. The expenditure was heavy, including extra wages for work at Ludlow’s Bridge, a debit balance of £2 Os (id is shown for the month. The following were the chief items of Ira die: Merchandise 105 tons, minerals 5)7.1 tons, timber 20,800 ft., metal, 1,2000 cubic yards, fares amounted to £3 IDs Id. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Awahoti Riding. —I made an inspection of the County reserve leased to Mr Walden, on the bank of the Manawatu river and along the Elkins-Motniti road. I see no reason why Mr Walden should not occupy the reserve providing he pays up the rent due to the County, as it is not required for a road at present, and lie does not prevent any person from approaching the river, as (here is a wide road adjoining the reserve open to the public. General. — During the present month we have trimmed up about 5) miles of (ho Foxton-Sandon road with the road grader. The stone crusher has been doing first-class work, and during the month we crushed 1,200 yards of metal for the various roads throughout the Count v.
