IT is nine years ago to-day sinee the stains of New Zealand was raised from a modest colony to a dominion of the British Empire. Our Premier been me the Prime Minister, the Colonial Treasurer (lie Minister of Finance, the Colonial Secretary Hie Minister of Internal Affairs, and M’s.ILK. became M’s.lk But the change had a wider and deeper significance for this fair land of ours — if marked our growth .and importance in a higher sense as partners in the Croat Empire upon which Hie sun never sets, and in Hie affairs of which we are soon to have a voice. Onr development tightens the bonds of devotion and loyally to the motherland. .Dominion Day was observed yesterday as a public holiday by Hie Stale Departments and Banks-, and in some districts the schools were given a holiday. At the local Stale school appropriate lessons were given, and the (lag saluted. The observance of the day conlliels, in a sense, with Empire Day, the one day in the year which should be of special importance to every loyal subject, and to every child —its wilh the Day of Independence in the United Stall’s. Dominion Day has it local rather than tin empire significance, but that significance and importance should not he lost sight of. It should tell of our hirlh, onr pioneering struggles, our industries, political advancement, Hie Maori race, etc. 'Phis coast is teeming wit It interesting historical events, and Htese should he recalled to the children of onr schools on Dominion Day.
