12 OUNCES TO THE POUND
An interesting scene developed in the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court recently, reports the Herald, Avhen, on the information of the Inspector of Weights and Measures (Mr E. G(dins) a Chinaman named Wong Chong, fruiterer, of (he Avenue, avus charged with using inaccurate scales.
The case* proceeded as much as usual until the informant, producing the'scales in Court, gave a demonstration of (heir Avorking. He placed 12 ounces in the pan Avhercin goods are placed. The machine naturally Aveighled short. He then picked the 320 z. Aveight out of the pan, and threw it into the pan, Avhich again refused to go doAvn. A third time the Aveight avus put in, but this time in a certain "peculiar manner, placing the Aveight on one side of the pan, Avhereupon the scales immediately shewed a full pound Aveight.
Mr Brodic, appearing for defendant, tried to perform the tried;, but Avas Ainsuccessful, and Mr Gohns explained that he had seen the defendant doing it so often that he had at last “caught the kneed;.”
There Avas no further evidence against defendant, but the Court remarked (hat there Avas no doubt that the scales were very inaccurate in the hands of the OAvner. Such impositions on the general public must be shipped. A fine of .C 5 avus imposed. There Avere no apparent signs as to how the scales, Avhich Avere confiscated, Avere manoeuvred, but investigations are uoav proceeding.
