INSPECTION IN SCHOOLS.
NEW b’ECO.MMENDATIONS.
'fhe committee appointed hy the Council of Education to inquire into medical inspection of schools has presented the following report: —
1. That ;i national system of education should recognise that the health and training of the child from its curliest years should be the care of Ihe Slate. 2. Thai with a veiw to economy and efficiency of administration, as well as to secure correlation of effort, all movements dealing with the care of infant life and training, instruction of mo fliers and the care of young children, should he brought under the supervision of the health branch of the Education Department.
3. That all matters relating to the health of' children —including' food and clothing —should come within the scope of the work of the medical inspectors.
-1. That in the training colleges fuller provision should be made for the study of child life and the application of physical and mentality tests.
5. That in order to cope with the deplorable amount of dental decay in the case of children—as evidenced by Ibe report of the medical inspectors —facilities for obtaining treatment should he arranged fox'. (). That it is highly desirable to provide tor the appointment of nurses who will Jink up medical inspection with home training.
7. That in order to ensure the development to the best possible advantage of the hoys and girls of the Dominion into robust men and women, classes should be provided for the corrective ti'eatment of all who are physically sub-normal, such classes to be under the supervision of the school medical officers.
8. That special forms of instruction should be provided for backward children wherever possible, !). Thai the medical inspection of school children in the outlying country districts be undertaken as soon as possible, and that all children attending the schools of the Dominion be examined medically within a vear.
