NEWS AND NOTES.
A largo cuttlefish was caught by the crew of the Auckland trawler Baroona while fishing off Cape Colville, the eastern point of Hauraki Gulf, on Holiday. The fishermen had an exciting time when the cut-, tlefish was hauled from the net into the frawler, and its arms, with their rows of “suckers,” caused not a little apprehension. It was soon killed, however. The tentacles were found to measure 10ft. in length, so that with its body it was over 20ft. across. The Auckland Herald says that it is one of the largest specimens of the kind caught near Auckland.
The following 1 is mi extract from the hist copy of the Limed;, which should he of interest considering the prevalence of the whooping cough complaint just now. Indeed, it might prove to he the same as a. certain brand of pens, viz., “a boon and a blessing to men” to say nothing of the poor women and children: —“Take some cloves of garlic and slice them and place between two pair of socks or stitch them in the sole of one pair, within half an hour the smell of garlic is often perceptible in the child’s breath, and within two days the distressing whoop usually stops. It is advisable to let the child wear the garlic for a week or ten days, by which time the complaint is usually non est.” The correspondent who supplied (he paragraph states that he is forwarding the recipe l at the request of tv number of friends who have found it verv efficacious.
