CORNERING THE MAD DOG OF EUROPE.

A picture of the Kaiser standing at bay, and ringed about with a palisade of gleaming bayonets, adorns the cover of the September’ number of “Life,” and the legend beneath it, “Cornering the Mad Dog of Europe,” indicates pretty clearly what the editor —Dr \V. 11. Eitchett thinks of the position of Germany after two years of war. In the opening pages Of this number Dr Eitrdiett gives us a magnificent suraanary of the twenty-four months during which this titanic struggle has raged. It is a tine piece of writing, and is worth preserving as a record. Turning to the situation today, Dr Pitehett outlines the great offensive on the Western front, and douches on the performances of both the Anzacs and Kitcheners anen, and, in a similar way, reviews the great Russian di’ive oil the Eastern front. In this number, too, we find a reprint of the lecture which Dr Eitchett delivered in the Melbourne Public Library on “Some Literary Aspects of the War.” Among the special articles in “Life” for September there is perhaps nothing finer than Professor Gilbert Murray's description of the Bi'itish Army in France, in which he uses this striking simile: “The army is like a vast wedge, with just the apex white-hot in the tiring line.” Another useful contribution is that by Spencer Brodney, in yvhich he sketches the rival candidates for the United States Presidency, and gives his reasons for predicting that Mr Hughes will beat President Woodrow Wilson at the coming elections. The useful Departments, which are so highly prized by the busy man, are as full of good things as ever, and “Life” continues to hold its own as the brightest and most up-to-date magazine obtainable in Australasia. Our copy is from the publisher, T. Shaw Eitchett, 376 Swanston street, Melbourne.
