PUPIL TEACHERS AND THE FEILDING CLASS.

A SATURDAY class for pupil teachers is held at Feilding for the purpose of instruction in singing, drawing and science. In order to attend this class pupil teachers from Foxton are compelled to leave by Friday afternoon’s train, spend the night in Feilding, attend the classes and catch the afternoon train for Palmerston, arriving buck in FoxUju at 13.30 on Saturday

night. Is it a right and proper thing for tho Board to allow young girls to travel such a dislanec and spend the night away from home in order to attend these classes? They are allowed, wo believe, the sum of 3s Od for bed and breakfast in Feilding, and a free railway pass, but they are compelled to pay for the other meals that they require. It is alright for girls who can get to Feilding and back in the one day, bit it is scandalous to think that the Board compels girls in their teens to undertake such a journey from this district. Surely we have in Foxton or Palmei’ston North teachers with the necessary qualifications to undertake the work on helm If of those girls who find it impossible to make the attendance at Feilding in the one day. We have referred the matter to Mr Fraser, Board representative, and he lias promised to look into the question.
